Who Is Britain's New Home Secretary, James Cleverly?

Cleverly is seen as less ideological and more of a team player than Suella Braverman, his predecessor in the Home Office.

James Cleverly, who will take over as Britain's home secretary from Suella Braverman, is widely regarded as less ideological and more of a team player than his predecessor in the Home Office.

He will take over a department that is dealing with the fallout from Ms. Braverman's clash with the Metropolitan Police of London over pro-Palestinian marches in the capital.

When asked if he intended to break with his predecessor's populist rhetoric, Mr. Cleverly told Sky News, "I intend to do this job in the way that I feel best protects the British people and our interests."

Mr. Cleverly's most recent position saw him oversee Britain's foreign relations amid the uncertainty caused by the country's exit from the European Union and wars in Gaza and Ukraine.

Mr. Cleverly, whose mother immigrated to the United Kingdom from Sierra Leone, served in the military and rose to the rank of lieutenant colonel as an army reserve.

After the 2019 general election, he quickly rose through the ranks of the Conservative Party as a staunch Brexit supporter.

He was education secretary from July 2022 to September 2022 before becoming foreign minister, and he previously held a number of junior ministerial positions.
