Honest About His Reaction to Team Drafting Patrick Mahomes, Former Chiefs Quarterback Alex Smith

During his Friday appearance on The Pat McAfee Show, former NFL quarterback Alex Smith discussed how the Chiefs selected eventual two-time Super Bowl MVP Patrick Mahomes in 2017.

Smith led the Chiefs to four postseason berths in five seasons after joining the team via trade from the 49ers in 2013. As a starter, he recorded a 50–26 record.

After the Chiefs traded Smith to Washington the following season in return for cornerback Kendall Fuller and a third-round pick. 

In the 2018 NFL draft, Kansas City chose Mahomes with the No. 10 choice in the 2017 NFL draft.

Despite his success with the team, Smith was open on the show about how the Chiefs chose to choose the former Texas Tech star as his replacement, and how that decision first affected him.

"How inconceivable could they have been? That's exactly what I was thinking—like, what the hell?" Smith remarked.

"I was in my thirteenth year at the time they drafted him, so I knew that time was running out and nothing is guaranteed."
