Leonard Williams is on the move for the second time in his career, and this time he's heading west to join a youthful and motivated defense.
The New York Giants are nearing an agreement to trade Williams to the Seattle Seahawks, according to NFL Network Insiders Ian Rapoport, Mike Garafolo, and Tom Pelissero.
In exchange for the defensive lineman, New York will receive a 2024 second-round pick and a 2025 fifth-round pick.
Williams is becoming accustomed to switching teams near the trade deadline. In a contract year for the USC product,
the Jets sold him to the Giants at the deadline four years ago in return for third and fifth-round picks. Williams was eventually franchise-tagged by the Giants and signed.
Williams is now heading west to give the Giants some financial flexibility. In exchange for the higher draft compensation,
New York will assume a major amount of Williams' existing deal, which is higher than what the Jets received for Williams in 2019. While it may appear to be a minor benefit,
given New York's budgetary constraints during the last two years, any relief from a deal with a $32.26 million cap figure in 2023 is nonetheless relief.
