Director Todd Haynes claimed Charles Melton's "looks were almost a deterrent" for the job.
Charles Melton changed for his complicated part in May December. In Todd Haynes' new drama, the 32-year-old Riverdale alum plays opposite Julianne Moore and Natalie Portman.
The film stars Melton as Joe Yoo, a 36-year-old who started an affair with Gracie Atherton-Yoo (Julianne Moore) at 13.
They're married with three kids. Haynes told Vulture he thought Melton wasn't fit for the job.
"Thankful Charles Melton hit our radar. He wasn't my Riverdale guy. Haynes, 62, said his appearance deterred.

"I thought Joe would be handsome, but Charles has that hunkiness and pin-up quality that wasn't what I envisioned," the filmmaker said.
Haynes stated Melton "gained 35, 40 pounds for the role to change his chiseled self into something more familiar: a suburban man in this place."
